Two Part Invention
2012
This short piece for solo piano was composed for the wedding of my sister, Elise.
It has various numerological links to her, and there is also an obvious nod to Beethoven with the use of a “für Elise” motif throughout, which serendipitously contains, in musical note-names, Elise’s past and future initials (E and S [Es or E flat], from her previous marriage, B from her maiden name, and D for her new surname). Overall the intention is for two musical extremes to approach each other over the course of the piece, reflecting a marriage of two very different people.
Duration
5 minutes

Piano
First performance
I performed the piece during the Signing of the Registers at the dedicatee’s wedding in July 2012.
